Bryan wants to surprise his family by coming home for the holidays—but instead, finds himself staying in a hotel because the house is already filled with the rest of his family, including his estranged sister. Disappointed and hurt, Bryan spends his first night home at the local music store.

The holidays look up slightly when he meets a cute clerk named Jordan who also seems bummed out by the Christmas spirit. The two bond, but when tensions with Bryan's family and their holiday gathering only seem to get worse, Bryan starts to wonder if he would have been better not coming home at all

This short novella features Bryan, a doctoral student in Musicology who comes home to Kingston for Christmas. Things aren't exactly easy, though. He arrives a day early as a surprise, and discovers that his parents have decided that--due to their full house--they should rent a hotel for Bryan to stay in. It's actually a kinder arrangement than putting him on the basement floor on a blow-up bed, but it wrong-foots Bryan. As does the news that his uber-religious sister, her fanatic husband and their two kids are arriving tomorrow.

Bryan's been on the outs with Abby since he came out as bisexual several years ago. He's frustrated and on-edge, anticipating a blow up. Too cool off, Bryan heads over to his old music shop, to see if he can use the practice room. There he meets Jordan, a sexy gay man working the counter. Jordan's a good listener, and they chat a while, about their histories and Jordan's band, and everything they dislike about Christmas. Turns out they'd shared a class in University several years back, and they have some mutual friends. Their music tastes are disparate, but they find common ground nonetheless. They go out on a date, and hit it off. Knowing that Jordan has no family to spend the holiday with, Bryan invites him to his parents' home for the big interfaith party.

This is a pretty low-conflict holiday read. I'd anticipated a family crisis, and that didn't come to pass. I'd expected more doom/gloom. That's not really present either. So, in all, two men who have some similar interests and friends find each other in a place they hadn't expected. Their attraction is immediate and they make plans to continue seeing each other, whenever possible. I liked it. It's not super angsty. It felt organic and natural, without all the sharp edges of Christmas hustle bustle. I liked the Gremlins references, and there's a little bit of steam in the pages. Bryan came off as whiny about the hotel, at first, something he acknowledged. I could relate to feeling like an outsider in his own home, and the worry over an anticipated bad interaction. In the end, he knew he had the support and love of most of his family, and that gave him the strength to stand up for himself when he needed to do so. Strange Mercy edition by Francis Gideon Romance eBooks Reviews

When doctoral student, Bryan, decides to surprise his family for a Christmas visit, the reaction is bittersweet. His family is very happy to see him, but also don't have enough room in the house due to his sisters' families also visiting. Bryan is relegated to a hotel, which dampens his mood considerably. He decides to visit one of his old haunts and meets, Jordan. The two men hit it off immediately and Bryan soon realizes that his trip home might not be so bad after all.

I thought this story was just okay. The writing is fine and I liked the characters, but nothing wowed me about them. My heart went out to Bryan, especially when he was hurt by his parents telling him he'd have to stay in a hotel. Don't get me wrong, his parents weren't horrible people, they were just placed in a precarious position and tried to come up with the best solution possible.

Unfortunately, I did not feel much chemistry between Bryan and Jordan. They seemed more like good buddies than a budding couple. I also felt like Bryan's sisters were kind of thrown into the story; one was the happy-go-lucky supportive sister, while the other was the uptight ultra conservative type. I would have much rather read more about Jordan's background than the drama created amongst family members.

All in all, this is a nice holiday read.
