I am a fan of Barbara Watkins and she did not disappoint with Thorns of an Innocent Soul. From the moment the story began I was surprised how much I could relate to the main character. While some of the choices in this book confused me, I continued to read because I was certain they would be explained. In the end, this book left me feeling at peace and not for the reasons you might think. Because amidst the darkness this world has to offer, there’s always a chance to choose the light. Thorns of an Innocent Soul what a title. Barbara Watkins once again nails her story to the wall. She takes a subject matter that we all will have to face one day and weaves a story or regret and sorrow. The reader gets lost in the story as they read the tale of a young life gone so completely wrong in so many ways - then BAMM!!! the ending smacks you in the face. Before the reader knows they are at the end of the book wondering how they got there so fast.
This is an excellent story with many many life's lessons.
This book was a little different than I was expecting. That is completely fine with me. I enjoyed it a lot. It was a short book, but it made no difference to the plot and the story. Great book!
I don't think horror need be about something leaping out of a closet to eat your face. this story revealed the kind of horror that comes from the demons lying within people. in this story the main character and her brothers represents those simple choices. the brothers choose to make something of their lives and the main character chose to make herself into what had twisted her.
it is a really intelligent story in that we all know that behind the walls of every home, just about anything can be happening and we know that children are shaped by the kind of treatment they receive from their parents. we see this appearing in the news from time to time and I think the writer really did capture the worst of it.
that is real horror because it is believable and shocking at the same time.
it is a quick read, at times shocking, very intense and you get to the end wanting more
Author Barbara Watkins is a master at describing horrific scenes and emotions of those trapped in frightening situations. She strikes the perfect chord when she tells this horrific tale from the viewpoint of an innocent young girl who is mentally abused and neglected by her mother.
My heart cried for Jennifer as she grows to womanhood; mixed-up, with her soul bleeding through every word and action. She obsesses about why her mother Ella would do this to her, so much so that she doesn't even realize she is making choices that feed her mother's frenzy. Defying Ella doesn't work because her mother "outmaneuvers" her at every turn, costing her friends and all things a young girl needs in order to have a happy life. Jennifer never realizes she might be becoming like her mother in many ways. She tends to make choices that further destroy her innocent soul.
She wants to believe her mother is a rose, as mothers should be, all the while bleeding from the thorns surrounding the rose. Each thorn tends to cut deeper and crueler, yet still Jennifer tries to understand... Then there is her younger brother to worry about...and her struggle to believe in God.
I stressed about the fate of Jennifer, gasping at each turn of events. This is how Watkins always grabs me, binding me to my chair her excellent pacing and powerful words tear at my own soul, making me care for her characters.
What does Ella do that is so horrible? Why does she always blame the absent father? Is she aware of how she's hurting her children? Did Jennifer do anything to deserve such cruelty? Did her brothers?
But most important Is there a solution, and if so, how does Jennifer solve it?
That and many more questions will be answered by this prolific author before the stunning ending of Thorns of an Innocent Soul. Watkins left me gasping and wanting more.
After reading this novella, I awoke the next day with a "bittersweet book hangover," still a bit stressed by the shocking, twisted ending. It takes a powerful book to have that effect on a reader.
Kudos to Watkins for another thought-provoking, exciting reading experience; I haven't gotten over her Hollowing Screams yet. Keep your eyes on this author, as she is a force to be reckoned with in the horror field.

Author of "Millennium Babe The Prophecy"
I love Barbara's books. She is a wonderful author and she continues to prove just how wonderful of an author she is. The book was well written and I could really relate to Jen. I wanted to root for her, but at the same time, I felt bad for her and her mother. Part of me wanted to smack both women upside the head, to wake them up so they could see what was really going on around them. I love when an author can make you feel so many emotions for the characters, to make you feel like you could actually be one of those characters.
I was angry, sad, loving, vengefully, negative & positive all thru this book. It definitely stirred up all of those emotions. Too bad this story could actually be true somewhere, who knows. But I do know you find yourself intertwined in a young women's life & wishing you could step in & help. The ending was not your average one that usually goes with dysfunctional family situations but to put it mildly, there wouldn't be anymore pain. The desperation of it all was engulfing. I would recommend Thorns of an Innocent Soul.
