"Falling in Love While Meditating" ....Very Short Stories is UNIQUE!!!In the Preface, author Charlie Close explains what a VERY short story is.
It's usually a short story between 1 and 3 sentences long. (about the length of a
caption of a photograph or a cartoon).
Here is an example:
"What was at the bottom of a gravel pit? She couldn't tell. Not from the top. Not in the dark".
THAT's It!!!! The reader fills in the rest with their imagination. How did the girl come to stand near the gravel pit? Did she see a runaway dog? Did she chase after a tennis ball? Or was she simply exploring and playing outside?
What might the girl do next in the story? Do you think she's going to just go home.... or might she try to go down?
The reader is the author of the story as much as the author.
"Being a co-author comes with responsibilities. To enjoy a story and see its possibilities, you have to look at the story from his point of view".
Charlie Close wrote close to 200 pages of these fun teaser stories...( no more than a few sentences)...as he said. They ARE fun....and THOUGHT PROVOKING!

Falling in Love While Meditating Very Short Stories edition by Charlie Close Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Falling in Love While Meditating is entirely made up of short stories that are only one to three sentences long. The preface explains the purpose for the way the book is written, being that it's so unusual for just a few lines to be considered a whole story. There's just enough information given to let your mind formulate more story around the little bit that you've been given. A few of the stories didn't quite do that for me, but the rest did. I found it to be an interesting book and really enjoyed what my mind just assumed to go along with what I read.
Charlie Close has said “I believe that ordinary people and situations are interesting and important,” and each of these “very short stories” (“usually between one and three sentences...as long as a person has to speak before the other person wants to respond”) affirms our particpation in a common humanity. Close does this in at least two ways 1) he shows us real people in realistic situations, and 2) he calls on readers to collaborate, to complete the rest of the story themselves.
Most of the time Close succeeds at his goal, creating open-ended situations which encourage—even entice—reader participation. Occasionally, however, a situation may be so open-ended that it leaves the reader—this reader at any rate—at a loss, with little hint of a way forward. This, however, does not occur often, and the insights and general good humor of the book far outweigh its sporadic flaws.
If you are a teacher of Creative Writing—as I was, until a few years ago—I highly recommend this book as a good source to steal from. Buy it, by all means, purchase this book.
And then, If I were still teaching, I know what I would do. I would type up thirty or forty of these “very short stories” (thirty or forty good ones would be easy to find), cut them up into little strips, and drop them into a hat. Give each of your students one draw from the hat, and one do-over. Then have each of them write a story of two hundred or three hundred words in class, using Close's complete text as the beginning or end of their story (perhaps both, for extra points). I suspect a very good time would be had by all.
Here follow five of these “very short stories” to give you an idea of the book
His daughter was seven. He had X's and she had O's. There was no way he could lose.
“Your father wanted you to have this.” He slid something across the desk toward me. It was a fortune cookie.
“I agree,” he said. “I agree. Eight years is long enough to know I don't want to marry you.”
He held it out and let it go. One helium balloon was not enough to lift him above his troubles.
“You know those quiet moments in the story where the hero stops to think and becomes a better person? I never write moments like that.”
